Tesla has initiated a recall of over 46,000 Cybertrucks in the United States due to a defect that may cause an exterior panel to detach, posing a potential road hazard. The issue involves a component known as a “cant rail,” which was attached using an adhesive prone to environmental embrittlement, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The panel’s detachment risk could lead to a road hazard for other motorists, potentially resulting in injuries or crashes. Tesla has emphasized that while the affected part is considered cosmetic, the decision to recall was made to prevent possible accidents. The company plans to address this by using a different adhesive for the panels.
This recall occurs amid declining demand for Tesla vehicles and follows consumer backlash linked to CEO Elon Musk’s political associations. Despite previous internal assessments that found no significant issues, further complaints and NHTSA notifications prompted the recall.
Tesla reports 151 warranty claims potentially related to the defect but states there have been no known accidents resulting from it. The company’s shares experienced a drop following the announcement.
