In a violent attack on the Anwase community in Benue State’s Kwande Local Government Area, suspected herdsmen killed five people and injured three others. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, has heightened concerns over security in the region.

Military personnel responding to the attack were ambushed, resulting in the deaths of two soldiers. A Mobile Police officer and two civilians also lost their lives in the violence. Another soldier, who sustained gunshot wounds, is receiving medical care alongside the three injured civilians.

The attackers also struck Mbagbye and Mbater in the Iyav Council Ward, killing three more people. The series of assaults, which occurred from the afternoon into the evening, forced residents to flee to the nearby town of Jato Aka for safety.

This recent violence highlights the ongoing security challenges in Benue State, which has experienced a series of deadly attacks since the beginning of 2025, including a Christmas Day massacre and a New Year’s assault that together resulted in over 80 deaths. There has been no official response from security agencies regarding the latest incident.
