The Lagos State Government has initiated the demolition of structures encroaching on drainage channels along the Alaba International drainage route in an effort to mitigate flooding risks. Overseen by the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, this project aims to ensure the free flow of stormwater and prevent disruptions linked to flooding.
Recent actions saw enforcement teams dismantling various illegal structures, including cement buildings, wooden shacks, and container units that obstruct the drainage path. This activity is part of a wider governmental strategy to manage stormwater effectively, especially in light of forecasts predicting above-normal rainfall levels for 2025, which pose significant flooding risks.
Preventive Measures Against Flooding
The current efforts at Alaba International continue a series of preventive measures across Lagos, where flooding has been a persistent issue.
- Earlier operations this year addressed similar obstructions in Eti-Osa.
- Previous interventions were conducted in Yaba and Sangotedo.
These initiatives are part of a continued government commitment to tackle flood hazards by ensuring drainage systems are clear and functional across the state.
