At least 58 Palestinians were killed in Israeli airstrikes across the Gaza Strip overnight and into Thursday, as tensions in the region escalate. The strikes targeted numerous homes, affecting men, women, and children. This escalation follows the resumption of intense shelling across Gaza after the cessation of a ceasefire that had previously halted hostilities and facilitated the release of more than two dozen hostages.
The Israeli government resumed military actions, citing Hamas’s refusal to agree to a new proposal that contravened a prior agreement. The strikes have largely focused on areas that the Israeli military ordered evacuated. One significant hit was on a house in Abasan al-Kabira, near Khan Younis.
In addition to the airstrikes, Israel has imposed blockades affecting food, fuel, and humanitarian aid to Gaza’s nearly two million residents. Israeli ground forces also entered Gaza, capturing a corridor that divides the territory’s northern and southern sections, marking a significant escalation since the ceasefire earlier this year.
The international community is observing the developments, with the United States supporting Israel’s military actions, which aim to secure the release of hostages held by Hamas. As the conflict persists, the humanitarian situation in Gaza remains dire, with increased calls for international intervention to alleviate civilian suffering.
