Ruth Ikegah, a microbiology graduate from the University of Port Harcourt, has rapidly ascended to prominence as a leading advocate for open source software initiatives in Africa. Having started her career in tech with a high-paying technical writing job following a chance opportunity, Ikegah has since become a prominent figure in advocating for African participation in open-source software advocacy and community management.
Ikegah’s involvement in open-source began during a gap between her education and national service when she explored tech skills like data analysis with Python. Encouraged by peers engaged in open-source projects, she volunteered for initiatives like the Open Source Community Africa and She Code Africa, accelerating her learning and strengthening her resume. This engagement led to her being recognized as the first African woman to win a GitHub Star award, which propelled her career further.
Community Engagement and Leadership
Today, she focuses on documentation and community management within open-source programs, emphasizing the importance of sustained African participation in what is often viewed as a stepping stone to more lucrative roles. Her advocacy has included increasing African involvement in the CHAOSS Project under the Linux Foundation and leading a regional chapter to foster wider community engagement.
Consultancy and Mentorship
Besides advocacy and community leadership, Ikegah consults for African companies seeking to monetize open-source software and has co-launched an accelerator program to develop Africa-led open-source products. Her efforts have included:
