A severe fire broke out in the early hours of Wednesday morning in the Dakata area of Kano State, consuming properties valued at billions of naira. The blaze originated at a recycling hub operating within the area, where plastics and scraps are processed. The fire subsequently expanded to a nearby groundnut mill market, which housed various items and provisions.

The cause of the fire appears to be linked to electrical sparks from nearby poles. Kano State’s new Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Bakori, confirmed the incident as he inspected the site on his first day in office, stressing the need for a thorough investigation to prevent future occurrences. Prompt efforts by the Kano State Fire Service and private fire services succeeded in containing the blaze, although significant damage was already done.

Authorities have apprehended one individual for attempting to loot equipment during the fire. Meanwhile, affected vendors and owners are left grappling with heavy losses, prompting calls for intervention from both state and federal government bodies to aid in their recovery.
