Chelsea Football Club has finalized a £62.5 million transfer deal for Geovany Quenda and Dario Essugo from Sporting Lisbon. The deal, announced late Wednesday by Sporting, involves the acquisition of two promising young players. Quenda, a 17-year-old winger, was transferred for nearly £44 million, while Essugo, a 20-year-old defensive midfielder, was signed for £18.5 million.
Details of the Transfer
Quenda, who drew interest from Manchester United prior to this move, will continue playing with Sporting until the end of the next season. On the other hand, Essugo will finish the current season on loan at La Liga team Las Palmas before moving to Chelsea.
Chelsea’s Strategic Acquisition
This strategic acquisition aligns with Chelsea’s ongoing focus on bolstering their squad with young talent. It follows previous signings of Estevao Willian and Kendry Paez, both aged 17, set to join Chelsea next season. The club’s approach under the ownership of Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital focuses on long-term team building.
Currently, Chelsea occupies the fourth position in the Premier League and aims to secure a Champions League spot. The signings of Quenda and Essugo are seen as a bid to strengthen the team’s future as they continue their competitive endeavors.
