The United Nations has raised concerns over the escalating civilian casualties in Khartoum amid ongoing hostilities between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Recent military actions, including shelling and airstrikes from both sides, have resulted in numerous civilian deaths, affecting areas such as eastern Khartoum and northern Omdurman since March 12.
The conflict, which has persisted nearly two years since April 2023, has severely impacted the Sudanese capital, with allegations against both the RSF and SAF of human rights abuses, including looting, arbitrary detentions, and reports of sexual violence. Specific neighbourhoods like Al Giraif Gharb have reported serious incidents involving RSF forces and allied militias, while SAF troops face accusations of misconduct in Khartoum North and East Nile areas.
Calls for Protection of Civilians
The UN is urging all parties involved and their international supporters to implement measures to protect civilians amid what it describes as the world’s largest humanitarian crisis. The humanitarian situation in Sudan continues to deteriorate with significant territories remaining contested in the ongoing conflict.
