The recently appointed Sole Administrator for Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibok-ete Ibas (retired), has pledged to reestablish law and order amid the ongoing crisis in the state. Ibas assumed the role following President Bola Tinubu’s imposition of a state of emergency in Rivers, during which Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly were suspended for six months.

President Tinubu’s decision, based on Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution, was enacted to address escalating political tensions in the region. Ibas, a former Chief of Naval Staff, will oversee efforts to stabilize the state and collaborate with various stakeholders to foster peace and security.

While the state of emergency has faced criticism from several legal experts and political figures, it has garnered support from pro-Nyesom Wike lawmakers, who accuse the suspended officials of defying court rulings. Ibas’s primary focus will be to collaborate with all concerned parties to alleviate the disorder and restore stability in the oil-rich state.
