Among the standout innovations were methods to reduce carbon emissions from steel production, advanced exploration for underground hydrogen, alternative magnet materials, and new battery technologies for data centers.

Innovations in Steel Production

Limelight Steel introduced a novel laser-based technique to produce iron for steelmaking. This method aims to reduce the roughly 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions attributed to traditional coal-powered blast furnaces by utilizing lasers to heat iron ore to over 1,600 °C.

Exploration of Geologic Hydrogen

Geologic hydrogen was another focus, with MIT researchers exploring ways to exploit underground conditions to produce hydrogen and other chemicals. These efforts could provide sustainable fuel alternatives for various industries.

Advances in Magnet Technology

Niron Magnetics presented the potential of iron nitride magnets as a replacement for neodymium in high-powered magnets. Neodymium is increasingly in demand for electric vehicles and wind turbines, and most supply comes from China. Niron’s technology, which uses more readily available materials like nitrogen and iron, could alleviate supply chain issues.

Battery Technologies for Data Centers

Additionally, Natron Energy is developing sodium-ion batteries to manage the variable energy demands of data centers. This alternative to lithium-based batteries offers a less costly and more sustainable solution, with production facilities expanding in the United States.

These innovations represent significant steps toward sustainable energy solutions and highlight the ongoing efforts to diversify and secure energy resources in a rapidly evolving landscape.
