Starlink, a fast-expanding satellite internet service provider, is set to establish a ground station in Mozambique by the end of March 2025. This installation is expected to enhance internet connectivity for local users by directly linking satellite systems and reducing latency. Starlink’s initiative aims to improve internet access in Mozambique’s remote areas where traditional broadband infrastructure is lacking.
Since entering the African market in 2023, Starlink has rapidly expanded its presence across 18 countries, though it faces regulatory challenges in some Southern African regions. Currently, it operates ground stations in Nigeria and Kenya, with plans to add a fourth station in Zambia within the year.
Starlink’s ground stations in Africa aim to address frequent internet blackouts and slow connection speeds in these regions. The company is prioritizing improved connectivity in Western, Eastern, and Southern Africa, while operations in North and Central Africa remain limited. Despite regulatory hurdles in South Africa, Starlink continues to facilitate internet services through neighboring countries’ roaming options. The expansion of ground stations is part of Starlink’s strategy to strengthen its foothold in Africa amid the continent’s growing demand for reliable internet services.
